When people think of a healthy diet, they generally think of eating good foods rich in vitamins and minerals and exercise. This is correct, however, there is also another important factor that some usually miss and that is to maintain a healthy liver.
A good liver function enables your body to regulate food correctly to produce energy. If your liver does not receive the right kind of healthy foods, it stores the food as fat instead of energy. An overloaded liver can have a negative effect on the body. You see, the liver filters out what comes into the body and into the bloodstream, this includes toxins, viruses and bacteria. It is the body’s natural cleansing process. So, if your liver is overloaded with unhealthy foods, it is not getting the important nutrients needed for it to function correctly. Therefore it is important to watch what you consume. Below are a few guidelines you can follow for healthy eating.
1. Eat your fruits and vegetables (preferably raw). These are loaded with vitamins and minerals.
2. Limit your meat consumption to 3 or 4 oz daily.
3. Consume whole grain foods such as pasta, bread and cereal. Avoid the refined grain foods.
4. Limit your alcohol consumption to a glass or two of wine, beer or spirits a few times a week. Less is better. Alcohol damages the liver when consumed in excess.
5. Don’t forget about that water to flush out toxins.
A healthy diet is not only good for proper liver function, but overall body function. Eat smaller meals more frequently during the day and include all food groups. Even if you are trying to lose weight, it is not wise to starve yourself or skip meals. These are just a few tips you can follow for a healthy liver and body.
